The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) released a statement on the incident with the Chinese tennis player Zhang Shuai during a WTA 250 tournament match in Budapest.
With the score 5:5 in the first set of the encounter against Hungary’s Amarissa Tot, the Chinese threw the ball into the line, but the linesman ruled the ball out of bounds. The tower referee came down to the court and confirmed the ball was over the line. The Chinese was outraged by the decision and asked to call the tournament supervisor. After a draw, Tot deliberately erased the mark of the ball, although Zhang Shuai continued to appeal to the referee. Subsequently, the Chinese took a medical break, after which she decided to refuse to continue the fight.
The protests of the Chinese caused outrage in the stands, the Hungarian spectators booed the athlete. According to media reports, due to the actions of fans, Shuai started having a panic attack.
— The WTA does not accept racism in any form or in any context. The unfortunate incident that occurred yesterday at a tournament in Hungary and subsequent reports are currently under investigation and appropriate action will be taken,” the statement read.
Shuai is on the 28th line of the world ranking, the 34-year-old tennis player has three WTA titles.
