Tennis coaches in the second half of the current season will have the right to prompt their wards during matches. This was reported by the press service of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
The rule changes will come into effect on July 11, 2022 and will last until the end of the current season. Coach tips will be permitted at all tournaments under the auspices of the association, especially at the US Open and ATP Finals.
There will be a meeting at the end of the season to decide whether or not to accept this rule amendment permanently in the future.
It should be noted that tips will only be allowed if the coach is in a certain place, does not interfere with the opponent and does not interrupt the game. In addition, the tennis player must be on the side of the short in relation to the coach, while the coach is not allowed to interact with the serve when leaving the court. However, verbal coaching can consist of a few short words or sentences (speaking is not allowed), while non-verbal coaching (hand signals) is allowed at any time.
In case of violation of these rules, the coach incurs sanctions.
