He returns to the ATP tournaments: Garin gets rid of his problems, wins a difficult battle and enters Hamburg

The Chilean secured his presence in the main draw of the 500 category tournament after winning the third set tiebreaker.

Christian Garin’s goal (119th) to return to the Top 100 will have a key stop in Hamburg. The Chilean managed to overcome the qualifiers of the German tournament and will return to the main draw of an ATP after two months.

Important step, because it did not come from obtaining the best results in Europe. Since recovering from his injury suffered at the Masters 1000 in Rome, the Chilean has lost in first round of the Milan Challenger, reached the semi-finals of the Iasi Challenger and was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Tampere Challenger . It was during this last game that he was the protagonist of a strange injury that made him withdraw from the game.

Without showing any signs of injury, Garin withdrew from the tournament and reappeared after 48 hours of playing in the Hamburg qualifiers. He first beat Marko Topo (361°) 6-3 and 6-4. Today it was the turn of the Belgian Kimmer Coppejans (162°).

Gago overcame a duel marked by the rain that fell on the German city and which could seriously challenge the planning of the event, since rains are expected throughout the week. After an initial delay and a suspension of a few minutes in the first set, the national could not secure the set, losing 2-6.

Then he improved and scored obvious distances against his rival, securing the second set 6-3. Great moment which continued in the last quarter, where he quickly broke and played with the advantage in his favor. But the drama settled in the end.

The former world No. 17 couldn’t capitalize on his advantage (it was 4-2) and had to define the match at the tie-break. Thus, for the third time this season, he exceeds a qualification and, incidentally, makes sure to extend his stay in Europe by a week. This will be the last step before embarking on North America to prepare for the qualifications of the US Open.

Umag lacks Chileans

Tomás Barrios (125th) was just one game away from entering Umag’s main draw and securing a national presence after Alejandro Tabilo was knocked out in the first qualifying game. Unfortunately, the story was no different for the chillanejo and he also said goodbye to Ukraine in qualifying.

The Chilean lost to Dutch Jesper de Jong (176th) 6-2, 6-4 in a duel that lasted an hour and 18 minutes. The end of a great European tour for Barrios, since before passing through Croatia he reached the semi-finals of the Challenger in Bratislava, was a Challenger runner-up in Poznan and managed to play the main draw at Wimbledon.

Like Christian Garin, he must now go to Mexico to begin the North American cement tour. He was invited by the organization to the ATP 250 main draw in Los Cabos, returning to the ATP main draw since playing in Rio de Janeiro in February this year.
