The Norwegian tennis player in the semifinals faced Italian Lorenzo Musetti with the score 6:3, 7:5 without serious problems. While the Russian had to sweat in the confrontation with the Argentinian Francisco Cherundolo with the score of 7:6, 6:7, 6:3.
The match between Ruud and Rublev ended in victory for the Russian tennis player with the score 7:6, 6:0.
For the Norwegian, this final was already the third of the season. In Estoril Ruud was able to win the title, but in Roland Garros he lost to Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
“I’m almost at home in Båstad. My family, friends and fans are here in the stands. Everyone is here, from grandparents to old school cousins and friends. It’s nice to see familiar faces,” Ruud said ahead of the final against Rublev.
Rublev’s final in Båstad was his fifth in 2023. But only one won, not counting the Bostad tournament. For the first time in his career, Andrei was able to win the title at the Masters in Monte Carlo, having won a difficult victory over Holger Rune with the score 5:7, 6:2, 7:5. But the victories in the tournaments in Dubai, Banja Luka and Halle were not given to the Russian. In these finals, he lost to Daniil Medvedev, Dusan Lajovic and Alexander Bublik respectively.
“It will be a crazy match. In several previous matches he beat me. We are good friends and we respect each other a lot,” the Russian said after winning the semi-finals.
Before the final, Rublev beat the opponent in personal encounters with the score 4-2, including 3-0 on clay. However, the last two fights were left to the Norwegian.
“You are a very tough opponent, and also a very good person who treats opponents with respect. But today you hit all the fucking lines. It’s not very respectful to me, but that’s okay,” Ruud said after losing in the final encounter.
“Kasper is just an amazing player, especially on clay. I understand that I have to improve my level if I want to compete with him because if I don’t I will definitely lose,” Rublev said after winning the final.
Rublev therefore won the second title of the season and the 14th of his career. Despite the victory, the Russian will retain the 7th row in the standings. Seeing the positive dynamics of Rublev’s career, we can assume that this is not his last title of the season and we should expect more victories from the Russian tennis player.
