As an experiment, the body will allow technicians to communicate with their students, as long as they do not interrupt the game. The measure will come into force on July 11.
One of the big debates that has surrounded men’s tennis in recent years is that is linked to the implementation of coaching . For a long time, the ATP has opposed the fact that coaches can give instructions to their students during matches, sanctioning players who do not comply with them with warnings. However, the authority has decided to take a turn and, as a test, will allow tennis players to communicate with their technicians.
“In addition to ensuring consistency in the sport for the benefit of players and fans, This test phase will also attempt to increase moments of intrigue and closeness to improve the viewer experience.” detailed the ATP, through a press release.
The entity has specified the conditions under which this trial period will be granted, which begins on July 11 and runs until the end of the season, including the US Open and the ATP Finals, in November. After this period, the success of the measure will be analyzed to see if it will be definitively established.
According to this new regulation, coaches must be seated in places designated by the tournament; coaching (verbal and non-verbal) it is only allowed if it does not interrupt play or create interference during the point to the opponent ; while verbal is only allowed when the player is on the same side of the pitch and can only consist of words and/or short sentences (conversations are not allowed). Technicians also cannot speak to their superiors when leaving the field for any reason. As, non-verbal coaching (hand signals) is permitted at all times.
