Yesterday, the Ukrainian defeated the Czech Kreychikova at the tournament in Eastbourne
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk commented on the victory over the Czech Barbora Kreychikova in the second round of the Eastbourne tournament. In addition, the athlete spoke about preparing for Wimbledon.
“It was a very interesting and even match against Barbora today and yesterday. In general, I am very satisfied with the way I played. There were also chances in the first set, but it did not work out. Somewhere unlucky, plus yesterday she served excellently, which she did not have today. I took my chances when I could. And even despite the fact that I lost the first set, I felt that I have control of the game and it takes very little to get lucky somewhere, to work out somewhere. Yesterday at the end it got a little slippery because it got damp. I started to slip and she fell a bit, so I was glad that the match was rescheduled and with such a great score that we did not start the third set.
The only thing is that all this time, while waiting for the continuation of the game, I was in constant tension. I used to have a match postponed like this once before, but then I lost the second set and in general I didn’t play that match very well. Of course, as a result, we had very different weather conditions. Yesterday there was still an unpleasant shadow in the first set, but let’s adapt as we are. I am very happy with my performance.
After Roland Garros, I decided to take a break, because I was very exhausted and tired over the past few months. This struggle with the Tours and the whole situation that has developed has taken a huge amount of strength. I understood that there were great tournaments on clay, my rating dropped and I could play 125s [WTA 125k], but I decided to skip them and rest. I don’t know if it was the right decision or not, but I made it. I’m going to play more in July on clay.
My approach to Wimbledon has not changed. Even though it feels like you’ve been on the Tour for many years, I still haven’t played tournaments consistently, grass season for example. When I entered the Tour, the coronavirus appeared and everything was quite smeared. So I am adjusting to the situation that has now developed with the war and with everything that is happening. But I approach Wimbledon, as always. It will be an incredibly interesting experience, because what will be there probably happens once in a lifetime. And I’m very interested in how everything will turn out, to live and feel the emotions that will be there, to see what the situation will be like,” said Kostyuk.
In the 1/8 finals of the tournament in Eastbourne, Martha will meet the winner of the pair Gilles Teichmann (Switzerland) – Harriett Dart (Great Britain).
Recall that Marta Kostyuk is announced for the main part of Wimbledon, which starts on June 27.
