Athletistic/Tennis. After missing the first round, Daniil Medvedev will start defending his title against compatriot Aslan Karatsev in the 2022 Mallorca Championship on Wednesday.

Athletistic will broadcast a live online text broadcast: Tennis. APR. Majorca. 1/8 final. Medvedev – Karatsev. Direct

Over the past two weeks, Medvedev has been in top form. He started his season on grass at the Libema Open. After victories over Gilles Simon, Ilya Ivashko and Adrian Mannarino, he reached the final. The Russian met Tim van Rijthoven but suffered an unexpected loss at the world’s 205th racket.

Medvedev’s next competition was at the Halle Open Championship. He beat David Goffin, Ilya Ivashko, Roberto Bautisto-Agut and Oscar Otte to reach his second consecutive final. For the title he fought with Hubert Hurkacz, but was again defeated.

Now Medvedev returns to Mallorca and hopes for a successful title defense to make up for his previous two losses.

Aslan Karatsev started his season on grass at the Stuttgart Open but failed to qualify for the main draw. He lost in the first round of qualifying to Dominic Stricker. At the Halle Open Championship in the first round, he was opposed by fellow countryman Karen Khachanov.

Karatsev won the first set, but ended up losing in three sets. In the first round of the Mallorca championship he met Jaime Munar. The Spaniard won the first set, then Karatsev came back into the game, increasing his level as the match progressed, and won 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. It was his first victory since reaching the second round of the Italian Open in May.

Karatsev leads Medvedev 1-0 in personal encounters. He won their previous match at the Italian Open 2021.

Given their recent form, Medvedev will be the big favorite going into this showdown. Although he was a bit out of form in the last two finals he entered, he had no problems in the previous rounds. Karatsev did his best to break his losing streak, but his game was very unstable.

Medvedev’s weaknesses revealed themselves in his two defeats. His net game remains fairly average, as does his ability to handle low balls and slices. If Karatsev manages to use these shots effectively, he can create an upset. After winning the title in Sydney at the start of the season, Karatsev’s form was rather deplorable. He will have to play at an incredibly high level to beat Medvedev.
