Third racket in the world, Medvedev began the fight for the second title of the tournament with an easy victory over the Italian Matteo Arnaldi. In his first match since the semi-final at Wimbledon last month, it didn’t take long for the 2021 champion to make the transition to the hard court.
Medvedev only lost two games and quietly won the first set. In the second, he faced great resistance from the Italian, but still won the set 7-5 and with it the match in 86 minutes. He is now 47-9 this season and an impressive 8-1 in the tournament.
It was an impressive performance from the Russian as he saved all three break points and made 29 winners.
Meanwhile, Musetti, ranked 19th in the ATP rankings, faced a much tougher second-round match against Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis. After losing the first set 4-6, Musetti won the second set 7-5, restoring parity.
He continued his superiority in the deciding set and won the match 4:6, 7:5, 6:4. The statistics for the Italian season are 28-18. Earlier this week, Musetti, 21, beat Yoshihito Nishioka and is now 2-0 at the Canadian Open.
Muzzetti has been in decent form this year, reaching two semi-finals and six quarter-finals.
Previously, tennis players never faced each other.
