Monfils returned to training after injury, but will not play at Wimbledon

Svitolina’s husband will return to perform in July in Hamburg

Gael Monfils recovered from the injury and started training. However, the French tennis player is in no hurry to return to the Tour and will miss Wimbledon.

“This week I started training again and felt very good. Now I can gradually increase the load and spend more time on the court to gain both physical and game form.

Due to my recent return to training and due to the physical demands of tennis on grass [пятисетовый формат], my team and I have decided not to play at Wimbledon this year. Instead, I will focus on my preparation for the summer tournaments. I’ll be back to play Hamburg and then play Kitzbühel before going to the US,” Monfils tweeted.

Monfils underwent minor surgery in May for a heel spur that had plagued him since the Masters in Monte Carlo and made it difficult to move around the court. Due to injury, the Frenchman missed Roland Garros.

Monfils is the husband of Elina Svitolina. A Ukrainian woman and a French tennis player are expecting a baby girl, due in October.

Wimbledon starts June 27th. ATP, WTA and ITF will not award rating points for performances in the tournament due to the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in the tournament.
