After a disappointing third-round elimination at the Australian Open, Medvedev has won three titles in a row. His unbeaten streak came to an end at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells Masters final. However, the Russian recovered by winning the Miami Open.
Medvedev had a great clay-court season by his usual standards and also won the Italian Open but was knocked out of Roland Garros in the first round. He had his best major performance that season, reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals, but again lost to Alcaraz.
Last week, Medvedev reached the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open, where he lost in straight sets to eventual finalist Alex de Minor. As the third seed in Cincinnati, he missed the opening round.
Musetti took on Dan Evans, who won the Citi Open a few weeks ago, in the first round. The Italian tennis player won with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Medvedev leads Musetti 1-0 in personal encounters. He won their previous meeting at the Canadian Open last week in straight sets.
