The Latvian Tennis Union did not allow the Russians to participate in the Liepaja tournament

The press service of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) sent messages to Russian and Belarusian athletes prohibiting them from participating in the tournament in Liepaja (Latvia) due to the decision of the Latvian Tennis Union, reports journalist Yannick Schneider on Twitter.

A few days ago, tennis players from Russia and Belarus registered for the tournament received a letter from the ITF in which they were asked to withdraw from the competition, noting that they were prohibited from participating in all tournaments in Latvia. The athletes were excluded from the list of participants in the Liepaja tournament without specifying the reasons.

The ITF clay-court tournament with a prize pool of $60,000 will take place during the week of July 11.

In April, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announced that Russians and Belarusians were banned from playing in UK tournaments in 2022, even in neutral status, due to events in Ukraine.
