The first Russian champion of “Roland Garros” in the mixed category Andrei Olkhovsky I am sure that the ITF W60 tournament in Latvia will be subject to sanctions due to the non-admission of Russians.
The Latvian Tennis Union (LTS) informed earlier of an agreement with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) that representatives of Russia and Belarus will not perform at the ITF W60 tournament in Liepaja with a prize of $60,000.
The Russians and Belarusians, who had already participated in the tournament, received a letter from the ITF in which they were asked to withdraw from the competition, noting that they were prohibited from participating in all tournaments in Latvia. Tennis players were excluded from the list of participants in the Liepaja tournament without specifying the reasons.
– The international federations ATP and WTA have already declared that there will be no discrimination in tournaments. If it was said once, I don’t think they will change their policy. In my opinion, the tournament will be deprived of points or may not take place at all, Olkhovsky told RBC Sport.
The tournament in Liepaja is set to move from July 11 to July 17.
Russians and Belarusians were previously not allowed to attend tournaments in the UK, the ban also affected Wimbledon. The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), allowing representatives of Russia and Belarus to play in a neutral status, while punishing Wimbledon for deprivation of ranking points.
