Mesh for men
In men’s singles, Russia’s main hopes lie in Daniil Medvedev, Andrei Rublev and Karen Khachanov.
Medvedev has already won the title here once in 2021. In 2022 he loses in the fourth round. Moreover, the Russian hasn’t had the most successful performances in recent tournaments. In Toronto he was able to reach the quarter-finals and in Cincinnati he was eliminated in the third round.
In the current US Open draw, in the first round, Medvedev caught up with Hungarian tennis player Attila Balazs. In 2020, he had reached the 76th line, but he is now excluded from the ATP ranking.
Rublev in the opener is expected by Emil Ruusuvuori, who beat the Russian in the first round of the Cincinnati tournament. Ruusuvuori is on the 56th line of the ranking. In Cincinnati, he couldn’t get past the second round, losing to Australian Alexei Popyrin.
Khachanov defeated American Michael Mmo in the first round. The United States representative occupies the 96th row in the standings, but for the Russian it will probably not be an easy encounter. Khachanov spent his last meeting on June 6 at Roland-Garros against Djokovic, during which he was injured and missed several tournaments in a row, including Wimbledon.
In the event of a successful performance by Khachanov and Rublev, the Russians could meet in the quarter-finals of the tournament, and if Medvedev manages to reach the semi-finals, he will meet the winner of this potential pair.
Mesh for women
Among the women, Ekaterina Alexandrovna was unlucky. She recovered the Canadian from the 72nd line Leila Fernández, who in 2021 had already reached the final of the US Open.
The main young star of women’s tennis in Russia, Mirra Andreeva, does not yet know her opponent and is waiting for one of the winners of the qualification. However, in the second round she could meet Corey Gauff, who beat the Russian in the third round of French Open.
Russia’s strongest tennis players, Daria Kasatkina and Lyudmila Samsonova, are expected to potentially make it past the first round. They did not achieve the highest status as representatives of the United States. Kasatkina will face Alicia Parks, ranked No. 43, and Samsonova will play against Claire Liu, ranked No. 81.
The 2023 US Open will take place from August 28 to September 10
