Several big names are also in the draw, including former winners Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens. Current Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova is also in the running.
With all of these players and a slew of other contenders on the field starting Monday, we’ll be looking at TBS’ USA favorites.
Elena Rybakina
Elena Rybakina’s game is built around her powerful serve and aggressive mindset, a style that can pay off on the fast courts of New York.
Rybakina is currently the leader for most service metrics in the 2023 season. Earning 319 points, she landed the most aces and scored the highest 74.2% after the first set.
The numbers bode well for Rybakina, who looked solid as she headed to the semifinals in Toronto earlier this month. What doesn’t work in Rybakina’s favor is his poor 3-4 record at US Grand Slam tournaments and worries about his fitness.
She withdrew from her match against Yasmine Paolini in Cincinnati and arrived in New York with no Grand Slam experience. However, when one can boast of having such a powerful arsenal as Rybakina, the situation can quickly change.
Coco Gauff
If her recent form is any indication of what to expect at the US Open, Coco Gauff is the clear favorite in the competition.
Last month, the young tennis player won the biggest trophy of her career in Washington, and last week the title in Cincinnati. Over the past six weeks, she has beaten many top 10 opponents – Iga Šventek, Marquette Vondroushova, Maria Sakkari, Karolina Muchova.
However, the reality is not so clear. Gauff has mental issues in difficult situations and it’s not fixed so quickly.
And time is a luxury that tennis players cannot afford. Gauff remains a contender for the US Open title, but she is also a player who can easily be knocked out by a strong opponent.
Arina Sobolenko
Arina Sobolenko may have reached the pinnacle of the sport in Melbourne, but it was here in New York that her rise began 12 months ago. Without Ons Jaber, the Belarusian might have won the Grand Slam sooner.
After going through a difficult period with the service last year, Sobolenko has significantly improved this component in the offseason.
This, combined with her powerful ground shots, makes her the toughest opponent for anyone on the other side of the net.
Ons Gill
Jabeur, who has appeared in three losing TSH finals in the past two years, remained confident after her loss at Wimbledon that Grand Slam success awaited her in the future.
Jabeur took an extra break after Wimbledon, perhaps to collect his thoughts and emotions, and has only played one tournament since.
There’s a lot to read about his quarterfinal game in Cincinnati. She looked weak against Sobolenko, but thanks to a solid 12-4 win-loss record at the US Open over the past four years, the Tunisian might look tougher than ever.
Iga Swiatek
Most of the players on this list stand out for their good serve for most of 2023, but world number one Iga Šwiętek has excelled in both serve and reception.
Šwiętek leads the rankings in terms of hit points gained with 64.3%.
This newfound aggressiveness has been key to Šwiętek’s success off the slow courts, including winning the US Open last year. A her Recent losses to Gauff and Pegula should only increase Iga’s desire to win a major trophy again.
