Ukrainian beat Frenchwoman Elsa Jaquemot in three sets
Lesya Tsurenko became the second Ukrainian who made it to the second round US Open. Ukrainian tennis player in a difficult duel managed to beat Elsa Jaquemot from France.
It was assumed that Lesya would start the tournament with a duel with Bianca Andreescu, but the Canadian had previously withdrawn from the competition. However, the Frenchwoman (181 WTA rating number) managed to fight a more status opponent. The meeting lasted over two hours.
The most dramatic story was the first set. In it, the Frenchwoman took the lead 3:0, then Lesya equalized the score, but with the score 3:4 she lost the game on her serve. Three set points were won back by the Ukrainian in the next draw. Subsequently, Tsurenko developed success and left the game for herself – 7:5.
In the second set there was also a stubborn struggle, but after the score 3:3, Jaquemot managed to take all subsequent games. However, the decisive game was outright won by our compatriot – 6:1.
In the second round of the US Open, Tsurenko will face “neutral” tennis player Yekaterina Aleksandrova, seeded 22nd.
Recall that earlier the first racket of Ukraine Elina Svitolina confidently advanced to the second round, defeating Anna-Lena Friedsam from Germany. At the same time, three other Ukrainian tennis players left the tournament: Katerina Beindl lost to Anna Karolina Shmidlova, Angelina Kalinina lost to Sara Sorribes-Tormo, and Marta Kostyuk was defeated by Elena Rybakina.
