Medvedev: “I’m not one of those who don’t look at the tournament table. I know I can play against Alcaraz in the US Open semi-finals.”

Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev After reaching the second round of the US Open, he said he was keeping in mind matches with potential rivals in the later stages of the tournament.

In the first round, Medvedev defeated Hungarian Attilla Balazs 6:1, 6:1, 6:0.

— Who do you consider to be the most serious opponent on the way to the tournament final and who do you want to face in the decisive match? Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, anyone else?

– Well, I can’t meet Alcaraz in the final, only in the semi-final. I’m not one of those who don’t watch the tournament table, so I know I can have a semi-final with Alcaraz, a quarter-final with Andrey Rublev. You have to move forward match after match and take advantage of the present moment.

Carlos and Novak are the strongest players right now, but they still need to win their matches to face me if I get to that stage (smile). The most important thing now is to win every match. Then we’ll see what happens. But of course Carlos and Novak are the main favourites,” Medvedev told a press conference.

The Russian’s next opponent will be Australian Christopher O’Connell, who sits 69th in the ATP rankings.

“He is a very strong player. I don’t know if it’s the best year of his career, but he won some great victories, especially in the rankings. His game became more stable. He played the game in Doha very well against me,” Medvedev said.
