American former world number one Venus Williams failed to reach the second round of the US Open.
Williams was beaten by Belgian Grete Minnen in the first round – 1:6, 1:6. The meeting lasted 1 hour 14 minutes.
“It was amazing to play against a legend like Williams. I have great respect for her, playing here at 43 is incredible. It was my first time playing at Arthur Ashe Stadium, I enjoyed the game from start to finish and hope to play many more games here,” Minnen said as quoted by the tournament website.
Williams is a two-time US Open singles winner.
