The Belgian tennis player spoke about the reasons for his actions after the match at the US Open.
Marina Zanevskaya explains why she refused to shake hands with Belarusian Arina Sobolenko after losing at the start of the US Open.
The Belgian tennis player, who was born in Ukraine, cannot forgive the representative of the aggressor country for his position towards Ukraine.
“I know that I play for Belgium, but my whole family is in Ukraine. I respect Sobolenko as a tennis player. He is a great champion and works hard.
What he’s doing in tennis is incredible, but I made a personal decision not to shake hands with a man who couldn’t fight a war. I don’t blame him. He protects his family and I protect mine. My family members are ahead. Shaking his hand was like spitting in their faces.
That’s not the best way to leave court because people cheated on me, but I’m ready for it. I left the world of tennis with my head held high and the feeling that I did something for a good cause,” NST told Zanevskaya.
Remember that for Zanevskaya, the fight with Sobolenko was the last of her professional career. The athlete announced that he will end performances due to a chronic back injury.
