The Italian suffered this misadventure while playing against Arthur Rinderknech, for the second round of the American Grand Slam.
Matteo Berrettini fought with everything to stay in the game against Arthur Rinderknech. On court five at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the Italian lost 6-3 in the first round and 5-3 in the second. With the score level at 40 and his service rival, the Rome-born man pushed himself to the limit and the worst happened.
The current 36th ATP ran to the left to hit the ball from the backhand and in the process suffered a horrific right ankle injury that sent him straight to the ground.
Berrettini remained on the ground, writhing in pain, while Rinderknech came to assist him and the chair umpire picked up the phone to quickly call for medical assistance. Perhaps the most terrible thing happened then, as the Italian let out an impressive cry that alarmed everyone present.
