1995 Davis Cup finalist Andrey Chesnokov said the Russian Andrei Rublev beat the Frenchman with a clear advantage Gael Monfils in the second round match of the US Open.
Rublev won in four sets – 6:4, 6:3, 3:6, 6:1.
– I didn’t think Rublev would play so well. He literally tore Monfils on the pitch. From the start, Rublev played very strong. When Monfils makes constant accelerations, then there is fatigue. The Frenchman was struggling to keep up with the pace imposed on him by Rublev.
It’s hard to stay focused three sets in a row. In the third game, Rublev made several mistakes at an important moment, it cost him a set. But then he calmed down, started to play well and led the case to victory.
From what I understand, this may be the last US Open for Monfils. He performed well on the field, the audience was delighted, – Chesnokov told RB Sport.
Rublev’s next opponent at the US Open will be Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.
