Tabilo begins his participation in the strangest Wimbledon of recent times: without ATP points or Russian players

The left-hander will be the first Chilean to make his All England Club debut, as the duel between Garin and Berrettini is scheduled for Tuesday. All in the middle of a tournament that continues to make its decisions and punishments speak.

The world of tennis already has its eyes fixed on the All England Tennis Club, this place located in south-west London and which has hosted the legendary Wimbledon in its facilities for more than 100 years, perhaps the greatest of the greats. But this year the event is unlike any other and this time the British Grand Slam will not be based on points.

A measure that ended up being given by the disputed decision of the event to ban the participation of Russian and Belarusian tennis players, after the invasion of Ukraine by their country. The tournament took a stand and stayed there, angering the ATP who returned the sanction and announced that this year the event will not award points for the circuit and that those made during the last edition would not be frozen either.

The result is that players will lose the units they earned in 2021. Djokovic (3rd) will for example be deducted 2,000 points and Berrettini (11th) 1,200 of the 3,480 he has in his annual tally. In the case of the Chileans, Garin (44th) will lose 180 , while Tabilo (80th) will come out unscathed since he did not play in London last year. In fact, in 2022, the southpaw will play the main draw at the event for the first time.

But this decision will also lead to the absence of the world number one on the British lawn. Daniil Medvedev was one of 17 tennis players whose participation was banned, being undoubtedly the most relevant name on the list.

Daniil would debut with his number one quality in a major, in this edition of Wimbledon, but the organization told him no. They will join him Andrei Rublev (8th), Karen Khachanov (22nd), Aslan Karatsev (43rd), Ilya Ivashka (40th) in the case of men, while in the women’s table, the main absences will be Aryna Sabalenka (6th), Victoria Azarenka (20th) and Daria Kasatkina (13th).

The positive point for the tournament is that this edition will also have important returns. The most publicized is that of Serena Williams (411°), who returns to the circuit after a year’s absence . The American had played her last match at Wimbledon in 2021, where she suffered an injury that forced her out and for which she had not played a tournament for 12 months. Last week he competed at Eastbourne, but in doubles. In the first round, he will face Harmony Tan (115th).

In the case of men, Rafael Nadal is the one who takes the covers, since return to slam English after three years out for injury . The Spaniard is having a fantastic 2022 in terms of results, winning the Australian Open and Roland Garros. At the Cathedral, he will try to obtain his third Wimbledon (2008 and 2010) and his 23rd major tournament.

Tabilo and Garin ready for their debut

The Chileans did not have an easy draw for this Grand Slam. Both Garin and Tabilo will have difficult starts on grass, with the latter being the first to enter the field.

Alexander will have to face not before 07:15 (Chilean time) this Monday Laslo Djere (55th) on court seven in the hall. A complex match because it faces a rival with experience of these events and because the national tennis player comes between the cottons in this first round . A week ago, he had to withdraw, as a precaution, from the Mallorca ATP, and his physical level is an uncertainty before this duel.

Garin, meanwhile, will make his debut on Tuesday at a time to be confirmed, but against a much more complex rival. The draw was rightly cruel with the Chilean who will have to face Mateo Berrettini, world number eleven and Wimbledon finalist in 2021 .

Moreover, the Italian has been at a terrific level since returning to the tour, winning back-to-back titles at Stuttgart and Queen’s, both on grass. Mateo is a surface specialist and one of the big favorites to fight for the trophy.
