World No. 2 Serbian Novak Djokovic again expressed his disagreement with the decision of Wimbledon organizers not to allow Russian and Belarusian tennis players to participate in the tournament.
In April, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announced that Russians and Belarusians were banned from playing in UK tournaments in 2022, even in neutral status, due to events in Ukraine. For this, the ATP and WTA have decided not to award ranking points for performances at Wimbledon.
– I do not agree with the ban on Russians and Belarusians performing here. I don’t understand how they could influence what happened. I don’t think that’s correct. If this situation affected me and I would not be involved in the conflict, I would not say that it is right. I recall that between 1992 and 1996, the Serbs could not play at international level. I know how you can feel, — quotes the words of Djokovic Mundo Deportivo.
He also noted that ranking position had ceased to be a priority for him.
– Now I don’t run after the ratings anymore, like before, when I wanted to break Federer’s record. It’s not that important to me,” said the Serb.
Djokovic also admitted that due to the lack of vaccinations he wouldn’t be able to take part in the US Open if the tournament is held now.
— I know the limits, so an extra motivation for me is to perform well here. I’ll have to wait and see how things develop. The government should decide, – said the tennis player.
