Athletistic/Tennis. Third-seeded Danil Medvedev will face Argentina’s Sebastian Baez in the third round of the US Open.

Medvedev had a pretty tough second-round match against Australian Christopher O’Connell. When Daniil won the first two sets and took control of the match, no one suspected the drama.

It looked like the end of the match was not far away, when the Russian took the lead with a break, but O’Connell resisted and sent the pitch back. In the ensuing tie-break, Medvedev received two match points and led 6-4, but then double faulted. O’Connell scored four points in a row to win the third set.

The failure was short-lived: Medvedev took control of the game. He only lost two games and secured his place in the third round. He is currently 51-11 and 25-5 at the US Open.

Meanwhile, world number 32 Baez lost the opening set in a tie-break to Brazilian player Felipe Alves, who had qualified. But the Argentinian recovered from this blow and won the following two sets with the same score of 6-4, then his opponent withdrew from the race.

After also beating world No. 27 Borna Coric in the first round, Baez is now 28-19 this season and 2-1 at the US Open. He made his American TSH debut against Carlos Alcaras and lost to him in the first round last year. Alcaraz went on to win the US Open.

Medvedev and Baes haven’t faced each other yet, in personal encounters they are 0-0.

Match prediction

Medvedev and Baez love dominating their opponents by shooting from deep in the ground, but that’s where the similarities in their playing styles end.

Medvedev is one of the best attacking tennis players with an excellent serve. He also moves surprisingly well for his size and his preferred surface is hard. Baez, meanwhile, tends to play his best tennis on clay and has much more modest equipment.

Medvedev has the advantage thanks to his vast experience, consistency and many good performances at the highest level. Especially in Grand Slam tournaments, where he is 66-24. Meanwhile, Baez is just 5-7 at TBS and reaches the third round of a major tournament for the first time.

Baez has won his last 12 matches, winning the titles at Kitzbühel and Winston-Salem. However, Medvedev should have enough strength to break the Argentine’s winning streak.

Forecast: Victory of Daniil Medvedev in three sets.
