Polish tennis player Iga Schwentek reacted calmly to the fact that she would lose the title of the first racket in the world after the end of the US Open.
Shventek was beaten by Elena Ostapenko in the fourth round of the US Open and next week she will lose the top row of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings to Belarusian Arina Sabolenko.
– The last year and a half has been an opportunity to observe how much people talk and write about the “defense” of titles, ranking places, points… Sometimes I was very surprised to start thinking like that because of this. But for now, I have nothing to defend, and it’s a good time to write some thoughts.
For me, sport is a cycle of constant change, just like in everyday life: either you win or you lose. That’s it, it’s simple. New season, next tournament, new opportunities to win something, not to defend. From zero.
During the American tournament series, I was able to do more, for sure. I know many of you expected more from me, to defend the title and stay on top of the standings. But I have a different attitude: when I work hard, I grow and do my job – and thus create more chances for myself to win and achieve my goals, rather than protecting something. It can be done if I hold myself to high standards and learn from the best in our sport and my team.
And yes… What an incredible journey it has been as world number one. Thank you for being with me during this time,” Schwentek wrote on social media.
Schwentek has been at the top of the WTA rankings for 75 weeks.
