Russian tennis player Andrei Rublev lacked self-confidence in the US Open quarter-finals against compatriot Daniil Medvedev, according to Russia Honored Coach Viktor Yanchuk.
On Thursday night, Medvedev beat Rublev in the US Open quarter-finals 6:4, 6:3, 6:4.
– I think the match was decided in advance in the first set, which shaped the subsequent outcome of the confrontation. Daniel was much more confident than Andrei. In the first set, he serenely regained the game lost on his serve and took the game on Rublev’s serve with no less confidence. It was a clear message to Andrei that Medvedev would not back down and only victory would suit him.
Speaking of Andrey, I believe he couldn’t show all his best qualities in this game. He had better games. He only showed himself in the episodes of the match, which, of course, is not enough to win. To some extent, Andrei was disappointed with his psychology, he lacked calmness and self-confidence. This was particularly evident late in the game. Andrei frankly gave up and wanted to finish the game as soon as possible, – said Yanchuk RT.
Medvedev’s next opponent will be world No. 1 Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, to be played on Friday.
