Spaniard world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz declared that the Russian Daniel Medvedev deserved to reach the 2023 US Open final.
In the semifinals of the US Open, Medvedev defeated Alcaraz with a score of 7:6 (7:3), 6:1, 3:6, 6:3. The score of personal matches became 2–2, while the Russian twice beat the Spanish tennis player at Grand Slam tournaments.
“The lesson is that I can’t waste my opportunities and a lead like this in a tiebreaker if I want to win Grand Slams and become one of the best. I didn’t play mature enough to handle a match like that.
I would love to face Djokovic in the final, but Medvedev deserves it more than me. I was surprised by his forehand because he had increased his speed and made few unforced errors.
I always want to improve and be better. We learn more from defeats than from victories. I need to analyze what I did wrong. The season continues and no one has died. There are big tournaments coming up,” Marca quoted Alcaraz as saying.
Medvedev will face Novak Djokovic in the 2023 US Open final. This match will be the 15th between them. Medvedev currently has five head-to-head victories, while 23-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic has nine. The Russian beat the Serbian in straight sets in the 2021 US Open final.
