Daniel Medvedev reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the fifth time, which is the best result among Russian tennis players in men’s singles.
On Saturday, Medvedev, 27, beat world number one Carlos Alcaraz to reach the deciding match at the US Open. Previously, the best result in number of finals (4) in Grand Slam tournaments belonged to Marat Safin .
Former world number one Safin won the US Open in 2000 and the Australian Open in 2005, and also lost twice in the final of the Australian tournament.
Medvedev will face Serbian Novak Djokovic in the US Open final. This match will be the 15th between the tennis players. Medvedev currently has five head-to-head victories, while 23-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic has nine. The Russian beat the Serbian in straight sets in the 2021 US Open final.
