“We saw a completely different Medvedev. He forced himself to play powerful and precise tennis.” – Anna Dmitrieva

Daniel Medvedev in the semi-final of the US Open against the world number one Carlos Alcaraz forced herself to play quickly and powerfully, the audience saw a completely different tennis performed by the Russian, multiple USSR tennis champion Anna Dmitrieva told .

On Sunday, Medvedev beat Alcaraz in the US Open semifinals 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. The Russian’s opponent in the final was Serbian Novak Djokovic. The meeting will take place on September 10.

“This time we saw a completely different Daniil Medvedev. He thought everything through deeply and forced himself to play completely different tennis – powerful, lively, fast, impetuous. In this match, it was not Alcaraz who attacked, but Medvedev. While the Spaniard took the initiative, Daniil found incredibly risky ways to win on his own. I was blown away by this game from the start. But the second set performed by Medvedev, where he was in control, was particularly impressive. Alcaraz’s racket literally fell from his hands. The Spaniard was not ready for such a development of events.

Throughout the match he tried to attack, but Daniil wouldn’t let him. What is very valuable is that Medvedev delivered an excellent first serve in the first two sets, which allowed him to win matches with confidence.

The turning point was Alcaraz’s service game with a score of 3:2 in favor of Daniil in the fourth set. This lasted about 14-15 minutes. Medvedev lost 15:40, but played unexpectedly and effectively, leveling the score. It was then that he felt he could and should continue. It was very interesting to watch that. Medvedev understood that he had no right to lose two goals in a row and he maintained this balance. Alcaraz had many chances to win the match – five times he had the advantage, he advanced and took risks. But then Medvedev showed incredible resilience and won the match, and the score became 4:2 in his favor. After that, Daniil literally broke his serve in 45 seconds.

The fate of the match had already been decided, but there was another dangerous moment when Medvedev served for the match. Alcaraz led 40:15, then still had several break points. On the first match point, Daniil, as often happens to him, committed a double fault. But even then, Medvedev stood his ground and showed firmness, because it was his day.

I don’t want to make any predictions for the final. Medvedev and Djokovic have their own working relationship. Danya was particularly attentive to Alcaraz. It also required excellent physical preparation to cover the field at a breakneck pace from one corner to the next, as the 20-year-old Spaniard does. I hope there will be a fight in the match between Medvedev and Djokovic,” Dmitrieva told .

Medvedev and Djokovic will face each other for the 15th time. Currently, the Russian has five victories in personal encounters, while 23-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic has nine. In the US Open 2021 final, Medvedev defeated the Serbian in three sets.
