Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev said he would have to surpass himself to beat the Serb Novak Djokovic in the US Open final.
On Saturday, Medvedev beat world number one Carlos Alcaraz of Spain to reach the US Open final. The 27-year-old Russian beat Djokovic in the final of the 2021 tournament in three sets (6-4 6-4 6-4). On Sunday, he will try to prevent the Serbian from winning a record 24th Grand Slam title.
“The challenge is to face a guy who has won 23 Grand Slam tournaments. I only have one. When I beat him here, I managed to play better than me. I have to do this again. There is no other way – said Medvedev in an on-field interview.
Medvedev reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the fifth time and the US Open final for the third time.
