Medvedev vs Djokovic: predictions for the US Open final

Aside from his third-round match against Laslo Djere, where Djokovic had to bounce back after losing two sets, the Serb easily managed to reach the semi-finals, where he faced Ben Shelton.

Djokovic started the match brightly and won the first two sets 6-3, 6-2. Shelton tried to fight back in the third set and even earned a set point. However, Djokovic’s superiority and experience allowed him to win the deciding set 7-6 (4) and reach his 10th US Open final.

Medvedev started the US Open with a comfortable 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Attila Balazs and beat Christopher O’Connell, Sebastian Baez, Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev to reach the semi-finals.

Here he met world number one and reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz. The first set was tense and ended in a tie-break, which the Russian won with a score of 7-3. Medvedev then dominated the second set and won it 6-1.

Alcaraz fought back in the third game to win 6-3, confirming his hopes of saving the match. But the Russian was in fine form that evening, winning the fourth set 6-3 and reaching his third US Open final.

Djokovic leads the confrontations with Medvedev 9-5. However, it was Daniil who emerged victorious the last time they faced each other, winning 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-finals of the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships.

Djokovic has shown sensational form in the United States and will no doubt be favored by most people. However, Medvedev had several good wins against the Serb, most notably spoiling him for the Calendar Slam in the 2021 US Open final.

Djokovic was precise on his first serve for two weeks, serving 47 aces and winning 263 of 332 points (79.2%). He also has 180 winners with 144 unforced errors.

Good attack and defense with endurance – there are few flaws in the Serbian’s game. Add an elite mentality to that list and it makes him a formidable opponent.

Medvedev, on the other hand, will be very confident after beating Carlos Alcaraz, who had already crushed him at Wimbledon and Indian Wells.

Medvedev was very efficient on his first serve, serving 60 aces and winning 295 points out of 374 (78.9%). However, his second serve was a bit problematic at times, as he committed 45 double faults. The Russian will have to be careful against Djokovic, who is perhaps the best player in terms of returning the ball to the opposing side.

Medvedev may not be the most stylish player, but few can match his efficiency. The 27-year-old is an excellent counter-attacking player who can quickly switch from defense to attack if necessary.

Composure will be key for Medvedev in this match as he faces an opponent well known for his resilience in the face of adversity. The Russian handled Alcaraz very well and if he can keep his cool and not lose his composure in the final, he will have a good chance of winning his second US Open title.
