Then there was the victory of Swiss Stan Wawrinka over Serbian Novak Djokovic in the 2016 final. Djokovic won the first set with a score of 7:6 (7:1), but then lost three sets in a row – 4 :6, 5:7, 3:6. It was Djokovic’s only loss at the US Open in matches where he won the first set.
The last such victory came in 2020, when Austrian Dominic Thiem defeated German Alexander Zverev in five sets. Thiem lost the first two sets, but then won the other three, including the decisive tiebreaker: 2:6, 4:6, 6:4, 6:3, 7:6 (8:6).
