How the English tournament can affect the financial ranking of the most successful tennis players

On June 27, the 135th Wimbledon Tennis Tournament starts on the grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London. This time, 128 tennis players in the men’s and women’s singles (including four Ukrainians) will play in the main draw of the tournament, and the prize fund of the tournament will be the largest in history. As a result, performances in England can seriously affect the ranking of the most financially successful tennis players, where so far the big three – Djokovic, Nadal and Federer – are out of competition.

Incomplete “big three” in men

So, during his professional career, Djokovic earned more than 140 million euros in prize money alone. Nadal and Federer have more than 117 million euros in prize money.

At the same time, the Spaniard surpasses the Serb and the Swiss in the number of victories in the Grand Slam tournaments in singles – 22 wins against 20. But Djokovic won three tournaments in a row, including last year, bringing the number of his trophies on London courts to six and second in this indicator only to Federer (8 wins), which Wimbledon 2022 will miss. Nadal last won in London in 2010.

Four Ukrainian women and a possible derby in the second round

Four Ukrainians will start in the main draw of Wimbledon 2022 – Dayana Yastremska, Marta Kostyuk, Angelina Kalinina and Lesya Tsurenko.

The first racket of Ukraine – Angelina Kalinina – will face the Hungarian athlete Anna Bondar. If Angelina wins in the second round, she can play against another Ukrainian – Lesya Tsurenko, who will meet with Briton Jody Burrage in the first round.

Yastremska will play with Romanian Anna Bogdan in the first round. At the same time, the winner of the pair goes to the best tennis player in the confrontation between Jasmine Paulini and Petra Kvitova. Marta Kostyuk will face British tennis player Kathy Swan. The winner in the second round will play with the winner of the pair Shuai Jeng – Misaki Doi.

Last season at Wimbledon, Ashleigh Barty celebrated her victory, having decided to end her career by winning the Australian Open. But Serena Williams, who won the tournament seven times and, perhaps, still hopes to repeat Martina Navratilova’s record of nine wins at Wimbledon, will perform in London.

Record prize money

This year’s Wimbledon prize fund will be £40,350,000 – almost €47 million. This is 11.1% more than in 2021 (when the prize money decreased due to the covid problems that followed the pandemic), and 5.4% more than in 2019, when the tournament was held under normal conditions (in 2020 the tournament was not was carried out).

The prize pool in men’s and women’s singles will be increased by 1.8% compared to 2019. At the same time, the organizers increased the amount of prize money for the losers in the first round.

Now the winners in the men’s and women’s categories will receive 2 million pounds – 2.33 million euros, the finalists – 1.22 million. The tennis player who won the match of the first round – 50 thousand pounds – 58 thousand euros.

At the same time, the prize fund of the tournament in doubles increased by 9.6% compared to last year, and the amount of prize money in mixed doubles increased by 17.4% compared to the previous season. Thus, the winners of the doubles tournament will receive 450 thousand pounds – 628 thousand euros. Mixed winners – 124 thousand pounds – 144 thousand euros.

Chance for Djokovic and Nadal

As mentioned above, Federer skipped Wimbledon 2022, focusing on recovery. And if so, the Spaniard Rafael Nadal should break away from the Swiss in the amount of prize money earned, and Djokovic can bypass Federer in the number of Grand Slam victories.

Tennis player Number of Grand Slam wins (singles) Prize money (million euros)
Novak Djokovic (Serbia) twenty 140.8
Rafael Nadal (Spain) 22 117.6
Roger Federer (Switzerland) twenty 117.5

Alexander Zverev (Germany) 0 29.1
David Ferrer (Spain) 0 28.3
Andre Agassi (USA) eight 28
Marin Cilic (Croatia) one 27.4

If we talk about the financial rating of women, then the Williams sisters are out of competition here. Moreover, the youngest – Serena – is significantly ahead of the older one (Venus) both in terms of the number of victories in the Grand Slam tournaments and in the number of prize money. Williams Jr. will be able to further strengthen her leadership after Wimbledon 2022, where she will be among the favorites.
