Kalinina: You can’t compare the ban on Russians at Wimbledon with the events in Ukraine

Athletes from Russia and Belarus suspended from participation in Wimbledon due to hostilities in Ukraine

Ukrainian tennis player Angelina Kalinina spoke about the ban of the organizers of Wimbledon 2022 on the performances of Russian and Belarusian athletes.

“In the whole situation, I cannot be, how shall I put it, objective. Yes, all these guys are players, I understand, we are all athletes. But we can’t compare points, we can’t compare this ban on speaking with what is happening in Ukraine now, ”Kalinina said.

“We cannot compare what they are now without with the fact that millions of people are being killed, that people are dying, that people are becoming refugees and trying to survive, all these mothers with children, how many people are left without money, without a family, without work . They don’t have anything. They are like homeless people. So it’s impossible to compare such things.”

Recall that Russian and Belarusian tennis players were not allowed to participate in Wimbledon due to the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine. Because of this, the ATP, WTA and ITF will not award ranking points for performance in the tournament.

The total prize fund of Wimbledon this year will be a record 40.35 million pounds. Champions of the single men’s and women’s tournaments will receive two million pounds, finalists – more than a million.

Kalinina had a successful start at Wimbledon 2022 and reached the second round of the main draw, where she will play with another Ukrainian representative, Lesya Tsurenko.
