“If I wasn’t from Serbia, I would have been famous in the sport many years ago, especially in the West” – Djokovic

Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic expressed the view that his background prevented him from being properly recognized in the West.

After Djokovic’s victory at the US Open, journalists asked him if he could be considered the best athlete in history.

“I’ll leave it to you and everyone else to decide whether I deserve the right to participate in this discussion.” There is, however, one fact: if I was not from Serbia, I would have been celebrated many years ago in the sports world, especially in the West.

But this is part of my journey, I am grateful and proud to have come from Serbia – thanks to this, all these achievements become even sweeter and bring even more pleasure,” Djokovic said according to Tennis Majors.

Djokovic holds the record for most Grand Slam singles titles for men and women, along with Margaret Court (24). During his career, the 36-year-old Serbian won 96 ATP singles tournaments.
