Russian tennis players Veronica Kudermetova And Ekaterina Alexandrova failed to qualify for the second round of the WTA tournament in San Diego.
Kudermetova, who received the 6th seed from the organizers, lost in straight sets by the same score 4:6 to American Sofia Kenin, playing on a wild card.
Alexandrova lost to Latvian representative Elena Ostapenko in a long match that lasted around three hours. In the first two matches, the opponents exchanged tiebreaker victories; in the deciding set, Ostapenko won with a score of 7:5.
In the second round of the tournament, only Anastasia Potapova will play among the Russians.
