Marin Cilic and Matteo Berrettini have dropped out of London competition after testing positive. The Spaniard and the Serb are attentive to his development since they trained the previous days with the two tennis players.
COVID-19 threatens Wimbledon. The tournament being played in London is suffering from the harshness of the pandemic, which is beginning to infect athletes who are now competing in one of the most important tournaments of the season.
At the first hour, Marin Cilic said he was infected with the virus. His loss gave way to Nuno Borges, a lucky loser to take his place. However, a worrying aspect is that four days before testing positive, the Serb trained with Novak Djokovic on center court at Wimbledon. The two shared with effusive greetings and a pleasant conversation that was captured by different media.
He wasn’t the only one infected. Matteo Berrettini (11th), one of those called to be the protagonist of the competition, also had to be absent due to the virus. The Italian, who would face Cristian Garin, didn’t hide his frustration on his social media. The Chilean finally faced Elias Imer.
The news hit Berrettini. More when he came after winning two grass-court tournaments in a row. “I am heartbroken to announce that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon due to a positive test result for COVID-19. I had flu symptoms and have been in self-isolation for a few days. the symptoms were not severe, I decided it was important to have another test this morning to protect the health and safety of my fellow competitors and everyone else involved in the tournament. no words to describe the extreme disappointment I feel. The dream is over for this year, but I will come back stronger” commented.
Berrettini’s defeat puts Rafael Nadal on alert. The Spaniard trained on June 23 with Berrettini on the Wimbledon courts, preparing for the two’s debuts in the contest.
