The Serbian, recent US Open champion, gave his opinion on the current and renewed competition system. He did not support the direct criticism launched against the former Barcelona player, for his role in the Kosmos company.
Novak Djokovic the recent US Open champion, rose to the controversy surrounding tennis these days regarding the new Davis Cup format, which was very criticized by certain players in the discipline such as the Swiss Stan Wawrinka or the American Mardy Fish, who They filed a complaint directly against Gerard Piqué through social networks.
Nole preferred to clear the 2010 world champion of any responsibility and said he did not support the criticism against him, who, with his company Kosmos, abandoned the organization of the tournament after signing a 25-year contract. On the contrary, the Serbian shot against the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
“The ITF is the one who allowed the format change and the one who makes the final decision. He (Pique) had the opportunity to get involved in the competition and he did it. If anyone should be criticized, it’s the ITF. We had to change the format, and what happened was that we went from one extreme to the other. We have to find a balance,” Djokovic said at a press conference.
Furthermore, he added that “some have used my statements in the past to say that I support him, but now I think this format is not ideal. We had to change the old, but we have to find a balance between the old and the current.
Regarding the new format, in which Chile participates in the final in Bologna, Nole recognized that “The first years, with all the countries playing and all the qualifiers in Madrid, it was a problem for 99% of the countries not being able to play at home. Serbia hasn’t played at home for about five years and it’s a missed opportunity for us to play with our people.
“I don’t make decisions, but I guess my voice has some importance, and I hope that in the future the players will be consulted on this subject, because this is something that has never happened before. My opinion is that we should sit down and talk to see what is best for everyone, not for me, but for all the players,” he continued.
“I hope the dispute between the ITF and Kosmos will be resolved because if the ITF loses the case, financially I don’t know what will happen. The termination of the contract with Kosmos is also not good news because it has caused a lot of uncertainty about what this competition will look like in the future,” he added.
Djokovic has joined the Serbian team which will face Spain this Friday 15, in a new round of the group stage of the competition. The Balkans made their debut by beating South Korea 3-0.
