Murray faced Ye Kong Mo in the first round. Both defended their serves well for most of the first set. When Ye Kong Mo tried to force the match into a tiebreak at 6-5, the Briton made his move, broke and won the first set.
Murray saved four break points and started the second set with a match win. He ran into trouble again on his next shift, but once again survived. Murray then earned a break of serve in the fourth game and held the lead for the rest of the match, winning 7-5, 6-4.
In his first fight in Zhuhai, Karatsev faced Matteo Arnaldi. Neither came close to the break point in the first set, which the Russian lost in the tie-break that followed. He then twice fell behind until the break in the second set, but quickly came back to level the score.
Karatsev had four set points on Arnaldi’s serve at 6-5, but couldn’t close out the set. However, he prevailed in the tiebreaker and won the second game. In the third set, the Russian took the lead with a score of 4-0; the Italian could not recover from such a blow; Karatsev won a willing victory with a score of 6-7 (5), 7-6. (5), 6-2.
In personal meetings against Murray, Karatsev leads with a score of 1-0. He won their first meeting in the final of the 2022 Sydney Tennis Classic in straight sets.
