Tsurenko: Not my best match, but I showed Kalinina that I did not give up

Lesya defeated her compatriot in the second round of Wimbledon

Lesya Tsurenko commented on her victory over Angelina Kalinina in the second round Wimbledon.

In a match between two Ukrainians, Tsurenko won a strong-willed victory over the first racket of the country.

“I think it was a very tough match. Not the best of my part, but Angelina played very well from the very beginning. Because of this, I was in a difficult position. So I fought. I stayed in the game, showed her that I did not give up. I think that was the main thing. Yes, I just fought for every point, ”said Lesya.

“Today I played with a blue and yellow ribbon? Yes, I asked the organizers, they told me that it was possible. Over the past week, terrible things have happened in Ukraine, there was a terrorist attack in Kremenchug, many civilians died. It hurts me a lot to see Russian propaganda saying that that mall was not open. This is a lie, because my fitness trainer is from this city. His mother-in-law works there, she was lucky that she had a day off that day. My coach and his father were nearby, his father was knocked to the ground by a shock wave, and, as I understand it, he got hit in the head.

“Terrible things are happening in Ukraine. I feel terrible. And very guilty, because it seems like there’s nothing I can do. But I continue to play, as I said, I donate at least 10% of the prize money.

“Did I feel the support of the audience? Of course, it was a big court. Two Ukrainians played, a lot of spectators. Amazing support, that’s for sure. Today, when we were driving from the hotel to the club, our driver said that she had settled two Ukrainians at her house. It’s incredible how much people help what they do for Ukrainians. I was at the Polish border, I saw how many people were there, they were confused. Hundreds, thousands of people. They all packed their lives into two suitcases. With children, with grandparents, someone close to them with a disability. And they are all confused. So any support you give to the Ukrainians will be great.”

By reaching the third round of Wimbledon, Tsurenko repeated her best result at the tournament, which he showed in 2017.

Lesya’s next opponent will be Jule Niemeyer from Germany, who defeated second seed Anette Kontaveit today.
