The Ukrainian tennis player defied the dress code rules in the game along with Angelina Kalinina.
The Ukrainian’s confrontation at Wimbledon in the second round will be remembered not only as a sports thriller on the court, but as a violation of Lesya Tsurenko’s centuries -old tournament tradition.
The fact is that the British Grand Slam tournament has a strict dress code. All players must wear white and any display of bright colors is strictly prohibited.
However, this year the famous British strictness and tradition has paused for the sake of Ukraine. The organizers of Wimbledon 2022 have abandoned this rule because of the war in our country.
Tsurenko received permission to play with the blue and yellow ribbon on his jersey. With her, the 33 -year -old tennis player entered the derby against Angelina Kalinina. In addition, Tsurenko called on the West to provide assistance to Ukraine. He demanded “heavier weapons” for the Ukrainian army.
“You know, we just need to remind you that we are here and we are playing for our country, for Ukraine. We just want to remind you that Ukraine is in trouble and we need help. A large number of my friends are in front line, ” – said the Ukrainian after the fight.
It will be recalled that Tsurenko defeated Kalinina in a difficult match and advanced to the third round of Wimbledon. There he will play against German Jule Niemeyer, who unexpectedly knocked out the world’s third racket, Anette Kontaveit, from the fight.
