The German skipped the first round of the ATP 250 tournament thanks to his high ranking and defeated Pavel Kotov in the second round with a score of 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1, reaching the quarterfinals. Then he had to play 3 sets again and come back from 0:1 against seventh seed Miomir Kecmanovic. Zveerv ultimately won 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 to book his place in the semifinals, where he faced third seed Grigor Dimitrov.
Zverev won the first set 6-3, breaking the first and last games. The second set was more intense, with both players having to save break points in the first few games. They both managed to hold serve and a tie-break ensued. The German dominated the tiebreaker and won 7-2, securing his place in the final of the Chengdu Open.
Meanwhile, Roman Safiullin was unseeded at the ATP 250 tournament and defeated Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. He followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over fourth-seeded Dan Evans to book his place in the quarterfinals. The Russian then faced Jordan Thompson and won the first set in a tiebreaker before the Australian was forced to retire through injury. Safiullin reached the semi-finals, where his opponent was Lorenzo Musetti, the tournament’s second seed.
Safiullin took the Italian’s serve in the eighth game of the first set, and that was enough for him to win the match with a score of 6-3 and take the lead. Safiullin then made another break in the seventh game of the second set and won it 6–4, reaching his first ATP singles final.
Zverev leads the personal meetings with Safioullin with a score of 1:0. The German had previously defeated the Russian tennis player 7-6(4), 6-3, 7-6(1) in the second round of Roland-Garros 2021.
