Tuesday September 26 will be the day of the Russian finals of two ATP tournaments with Chinese registration. In Chengdu, our Roman Safiullin and a German of Russian origin, Alexander Zverev, will play for the title. And at the same time, but already in Zhuhai, the winner of the tournament in the 250 category will be determined – Russian Karen Khachanov and Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka will compete in the final.
For Karen Khachanov, this will be the first final of the current season. The Russian has in fact played few matches after losing to Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros. Due to injury, our tennis player completely missed the grass court season and his main tournament, Wimbledon. Karen then attempted to return to the tour at the Cincinnati Masters, but withdrew at the last minute. Two weeks later, Khachanov finally took the field, at the US Open, but lost to American Michael Mmo in the first round (2:6, 4:6, 2:6). So, on the eve of the tournament in Zhuhai, China, the Russian has played only one match on tour in the last 3.5 months.
But, as we see, it was not for nothing that Khachanov took such a break from matches, thereby giving himself the opportunity to fully recover from his injury. In Zhuhai, Karen was seeded number one and fully lived up to fans’ expectations. Our tennis player, as if in one breath, reached the final of the tournament, beating in the process the 4th and 6th seeds in the person of the American Mackenzie McDonald (4:6, 6:4, 6:4 ). and Sebastian Korda (7:5, 6:4).
In the title match, Khachanov will meet Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka. This tennis player is the same age as Karen – 27 years old. He was seeded 8th in the tournament and is ranked 46th in the ATP rankings. Thanks to his participation in the final of the tournament, the Japanese is now the 38th racket in the world, but his personal best is 24th place in the ATP rankings, which he had after Wimbledon this season. Nishioka has two singles titles to his name, including one in China 5 years ago. Yoshihito also won the 2022 Seoul tournament.
Khachanov and Nishioka met four times and the Russian had an advantage of 3: 1. Their last duel took place at the Australian Open 2023. Karen then confidently won in three sets – 6:0, 6: 0.7:6. And Yoshihito earned his only victory against the Russian last season at a tournament in Washington, beating Karen in two tiebreakers.
