The American missed the first round and immediately left second in the WTA 500 tournament, as she received the second seed. In the second round, she met Spain’s Cristina Bucha.
Pegula broke twice and took a 4-0 lead in the first set and calmly crushed her opponent 6-1. The American maintained her dominance in the second set, breaking twice again early on to lead 4-1. There were no further breaks of serve and the American won the set 6-2, securing her place in the quarter-finals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
Meanwhile, Kasatkina was seeded sixth at the WTA 500 tournament and faced Marta Kostyuk in the first round. The Russian returned to action after losing the first set and won the match with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, securing her place in the second round.
She then faced qualifier Despina Papamikhail of Greece and won the first set 6-4, saving three break points in the final match. Kasatkina then took a 3-0 lead in the second set, but her opponent showed some resistance, leading her to earn several breaks.
Papamikhail fought back, but the Russian eventually won the second set 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Pegula leads head-to-head 1-0 against Kasatkina after beating the Russian 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the 2021 Italian Open.
