Athletistic/Tennis. World No. 40 Andy Murray will face ATP No. 41 Roman Safiullin in the first round of the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday.

Murray had a decent season, scoring 30 wins in 45 matches, including a second place finish at the Qatar Open and victories in three Challengers.

The 36-year-old will come to Shanghai after an early elimination at the Zhuhai Championships and the China Open. He had a strong performance against Alex de Minaur at the China Open, but ultimately lost 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (6).

Roman Safiullin, meanwhile, has 34 victories in 55 matches this season, including the Challenger title in Koblenz. He also finished second at the recently concluded Chengdu Open, his first career ATP final.

In Chengdu, the Russian produced a brilliant performance. En route to the final, he defeated Brandon Nakashima, Dan Evans, Jordan Thompson and Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets, but lost to Alexander Zverev 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 6-3.

Murray leads the confrontation against Safiullin with a score of 1-0. He beat the Russian at the Swiss Indoors 2022 tournament in Basel.

Predictions for the match between Andy Murray and Roman Safiullin

Even though Murray is ahead in the confrontation with Safiullin and has a wealth of experience, this meeting could be tense. The Briton’s vast experience and excellent defensive skills will be crucial in neutralizing his opponent’s aggressive style.

Safiullin will look to use his powerful groundstrokes to set the tone. He also has a powerful serve and moves quickly around the court.

However, the British veteran has shown excellent tennis this season. The experienced Murray is more than capable of absorbing Safiullin’s power and withstanding lengthy rallies. The former number one in the ATP ranking appears as the favorite of the confrontation with the Russian tennis player, who actually has no achievements at the highest level.

Prediction: Murray will win in three sets.
