President of the Russian Tennis Federation (RTF) Shamil Tarpishchev considers that the position of the authorities and internal agreements are the main factors in deciding whether Russian athletes will be allowed to participate in the Laver Cup.
In April, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announced that Russians and Belarusians were banned from playing in UK tournaments in 2022, even in neutral status, due to events in Ukraine. At other individual tournaments, representatives of Russia and Belarus play in a neutral status. At the same time, Russian players are suspended from team tournaments – the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup.
“No one can know. Depends on the contract. If the ATP has the same agreement as with the Grand Slam level, where athletes play regardless of ranking and nationality, then they can play. Probably, apart from the players, no one knows. Is it strange that there is no Medvedev? Isn’t it strange that we don’t play at Wimbledon? It all depends on the authorities. You need to know the internal agreements, – quotes the words of Tarpishchev “Championship”.
The Laver Cup is a tournament held since 2017, in which Team Europe competes against Team Rest of the World. In 2022, the competition will be held in London at the end of September.
