Athletistic/Tennis. After a first-round bye, Daniil Medvedev will begin his title defense at the 2023 Shanghai Masters against Christian Garin in the second round.

After an early exit from the Australian Open, Medvedev won three titles. His unbeaten streak ended in the final of the Indian Wells Masters against Carlos Alcaraz. The Russian then returned to victory by winning the Miami Open title.

This year was the most rewarding of Medvedev’s career on clay as he won his biggest title on this surface by winning the Italian Open. However, he was eliminated in the first round of the French Open. The 27-year-old fared better at Wimbledon, where he lost to eventual champion Alcaraz in the semifinals.

After a less than ideal preparation for the US Open, he reached the final of the last season of TBS. In the final, he faced Novak Djokovic, but this time he lost. After that, he returned to play at the China Open and lost to Jannik Sinner in the final.

Christian Garin met the winner of the qualification, Aleksandar Kovacevic, in the first round. The only break allowed the Chilean to win the first set. The opponents then exchanged breaks of serve in the second set, but otherwise remained steady on serve.

The set went to a tiebreaker, during which Garin initially lost a few match points. He then saved a set point, but then lost three more match points. Finally, he converted the sixth match point to win 6-4, 7-6 (10).

Medvedev in the confrontation with Garin leads with a score of 2:1. The Russian won their previous meeting at Roland Garros 2021 in straight sets.

Predictions for the match between Daniil Medvedev and Christian Garin

Medvedev had a good week in Beijing, but his very first defeat against Sinner in the final dampened the mood a bit. As the reigning Shanghai champion, he will be looking to get off to a good start.

Garin started the tournament with a tough victory over Kovacevic. It’s been a pretty difficult season for him and his audiences have taken a hit.

Hard is not Garin’s favorite surface either and, what’s more, he will have to meet a player who is very favorable to him. With a record of 42-7 on hard this year, the Russian has made significant progress on surface.

With Garin nowhere near his best and Medvedev in pretty good shape, the Russian should start his title defense on a winning note.

Forecast: Daniil Medvedev will win in straight sets.
