Sabalenka eliminated Sofia Kenin and Katie Boulter in straight sets to advance to the third round, where Jasmine Paolini awaited her. At the start of the first set, they were tied with their opponents, but towards the end the Belarusians gained the upper hand.
Paolini lost his serve with a score of 4-5, Sabalenka created a break opportunity and converted the set point on the first try. The world number one broke quickly in the second set to lead 3-1, but lost the next four games and was on the verge of losing the second set at 3-5.
But Paolini could not finish the set, Sabalenka fought back and reached the tiebreaker which she won 7:4 and with it the match 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Meanwhile, Rybakina scored victories over Qinwen Zheng and Tatyana Maria and set up a third-round fight with Mirra Andreeva. Elena stunned in the first set dropping her serve twice and losing the match 2-6.
Andreeva broke back in the second set, taking a 4-2 lead. However, Rybakina found the strength to come back and won 4 matches in a row. Elena was unstoppable and she only lost one game in the third set to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
In personal meetings with Rybakina, Sabalenka leads Rybakina with a score of 4-1. Elena won their previous meeting at the BNP Paribas Open 2023 in straight sets.
