The national racket lost 6-3, 6-7 and 6-2 against the young Serbian tennis player in the semi-finals of the Luedenscheid Challenger, remaining on the verge of a definition for the second consecutive week.
Nicolás Jarry (121st) was on the verge of the final. The national tennis player lost 6-3, 6-7 and 6-2 against Serbian Hamad Medjedovic (395th) in the Luedenscheid Challenger. The young rival surprised the Chilean and overtook him in a duel that lasted 2 hours and 19 minutes.
Medjedovic, 18, was a revelation at the tournament in Germany. He entered the main draw after overcoming the two qualifying stages and until the quarter-finals he won all the matches in just two sets. Indeed, he crushed on this occasion Marco Cecchinato (166th), fourth best ranked in the competition, with a double 6-1.
For its part, Jarry defeated Brazilian Daniel Dutra da Silva (235th) 6-2 and 6-3 without major complications, but then he had a stumbling block with the Argentinian Santiago Rodríguez Taverna (176th), whom he beat in three sets, 4-6, 6-4 and 6-2. Jaime Fillol’s grandson had already come close to definition last week, when he succumbed in the semi-final at the Oeiras Challenger. Situation that repeated itself this Saturday, in a duel where it has always been complicated.
Things were uphill from the start. The Serb broke it in the fourth game, managing to place 3-1. That was enough for him, since keeping his serve until the close, he managed to keep the initial set.
After this first set where he was never able to counter the assaults of his rival, he won in a fiercely contested second half. The 18-year-old tennis player was set to continue his winning streak without falling in any sets, however, none lost his serve, Jarry took him to the decisive game and beat him 8-6 in this case.
However, this push was not enough. In the final round, the European tennis player made the break in the fourth and eighth games, beating the Chilean 6-2. His arrival in the final makes him climb nearly ninety places in the ATP rankings, since in the next update he will appear in 302nd place. In the definition of the Challenger he will have to face the Chinese Zhizhen Zhang (281st)
For Jarry, the accounts are not entirely negative. Even if he hoped to get closer to the top 100 by reaching the final, his performances will allow him to climb a few places. In the live ranking It’s listed in 116th place, up five spots from last week’s update.
