The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has fined the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) for refusing to allow Russian and Belarusian female tennis players to compete at Britain’s Eastbourne, Nottingham and Birmingham.
The total fine is estimated at £827,000, according to Sportsmail.
“Since February, the vast majority of the international sports community has been in solidarity. Unfortunately, the International Tennis Federations seem determined to be pariahs in this field. LTA and Wimbledon are to be commended for their actions, which are correct in the current circumstances,” UK Minister for Digitalisation, Culture, Media and Sport Nadine Dorris quoted to the Daily Mail.
Previously, Wimbledon unilaterally decided to exclude Russian tennis players from the tournament. As a result, the ATP and WTA have taken away ranking points from this Grand Slam season.
