The final part of the men’s singles tennis season is traditionally held in Europe. This week the 500 matches are being played in Basel and Vienna, which prefigure the Paris Masters. A trio of top Russian tennis players showed up at the tournament in the Austrian capital. Karen Khachanov reached the quarterfinals of the Erste Bank Open the day before, but Andrei Rublev and Daniil Medvedev are fighting today for tickets to the next round.
The first racket of Russia faced a very difficult opponent in the 1/8 finals of the tournament. Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov is now in good shape and played quite well on the Asian tour. In Chengdu and at the Shanghai Masters, Grigor reached the semi-finals, where he lost to Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev, respectively. At the Beijing 500, Dimitrov lost the quarter-finals to Italian Jannik Sinner. But in general, the Bulgarian left a very good impression of himself thanks to his performances at the Chinese tournaments. And good results allowed him to return to the top 20. Dimitrov is currently ranked 17th in the world.
However, for Daniil Medvedev, the Bulgarian is a convenient opponent. The Russian has beaten Grigor five times in the last six years, but has only lost twice. Moreover, one of our tennis player’s defeats against Dimitrov dates back to 2017, during their first meeting at the professional level. The last duel between Daniil and Grigor took place this spring in Rooterdam, when Medvedev won a crushing victory in the semifinals of the tournament – 6:1, 6:2.
Both tennis players started the ongoing tournament in Vienna with confident victories. Dimitrov beat Italian Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets (6:3, 6:4), and Medvedev left Frenchman Arthur Fis no chance – 6:4, 6:2.
